Authorities in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar have stepped up vigilance following devastating flash floods in Nepal and concerns over a possible rise in water levels in the Trishuli-Narayani-Gandak river system, officials said.

The Trishuli River joins the Kali Gandaki at Devghat in Nepal to form the Narayani River, which enters India near Valmikinagar and is known as the Gandak downstream. Any significant increase in upstream flow could have implications for vulnerable areas along the river basin in India.

LOW-LYING AREAS UNDER WATCH

The immediate concern is a possible rise in water levels along the India-Nepal border. In Uttar Pradesh, Kushinagar and Maharajganj are among the areas being closely monitored, while parts of Bihar, including West Champaran and Gopalganj, remain vulnerable to increased river discharge.

A sudden rise in water levels could cause waterlogging and flooding in low-lying areas, affect agricultural land, damage roads and other infrastructure and potentially require evacuation of people from vulnerable settlements.

However, authorities have stressed that a rise in the Trishuli River does not automatically mean widespread flooding in India. The impact will depend on the volume, speed and timing of water reaching downstream areas.

VALMIKINAGAR BARRAGE UNDER CLOSE WATCH

The Valmikinagar/Gandak Barrage has become a key monitoring point as authorities assess the movement of water from the upstream river system.

Officials have indicated the possibility of discharge reaching around 2.5 lakh to 3 lakh cusecs. Barrage operations and downstream water levels are being monitored closely, with precautionary measures being taken as required.

In Uttar Pradesh, irrigation and district authorities have urged residents to remain alert but avoid panic. Officials are maintaining surveillance of the Gandak and other vulnerable stretches.

RESCUE TEAMS KEPT READY

Administrative and disaster-management authorities have been directed to keep relief and rescue arrangements operational in vulnerable areas.

Rescue teams and essential equipment are being kept ready for deployment in case the situation deteriorates. Officials have also been asked to remain in contact with residents living close to the river and provide timely information through official channels.

Developments in Nepal are being closely monitored to assess their possible downstream impact on India.

VIGILANCE ADVISED, NOT PANIC

Residents living along the Narayani-Gandak river system have been advised to avoid unnecessary movement near riverbanks and to follow instructions issued by district authorities.

People in vulnerable areas have also been urged to keep livestock in safer locations and remain prepared to move to designated safe areas if an evacuation advisory is issued.

The administration has maintained that preparedness measures are precautionary and that the situation will depend on the actual downstream flow of water.
