Nepal Tragedy: Flash Floods and Landslides Kill 160, Hundreds Missing Along Trishuli River Basin

TOK News Network | New Delhi / Kathmandu, Aug 27: Nepal is battling one of its worst natural disasters in recent years after massive flash floods and landslides struck areas along the Nepal-China border, sweeping away homes, roads, bridges and other infrastructure. The disaster has killed at least 162 people, while hundreds remain missing, according to the latest reports.

The disaster struck on August 26 in the Rasuwa and Dhading areas, with floodwaters and debris surging through the Bhote Koshi-Trishuli river system. A huge mass of mud and rock entered the river, generating a powerful flood that devastated settlements and infrastructure downstream. The exact chain of events behind the disaster is still being examined, with a glacier collapse and possible seismic activity among the factors under investigation.


The tragedy has also affected tourists and pilgrims travelling through the Himalayan region. More than 400 foreign nationals have been reported missing in the disaster, with Indian nationals among those unaccounted for. Rescue teams are continuing searches in difficult terrain, while damaged roads and communication links are complicating relief operations.

The scale of destruction has been severe. Villages, bridges, roads, hydropower facilities and border infrastructure were damaged or swept away by the force of the floodwaters. Authorities have warned that the situation remains dangerous in areas close to major rivers as rescue and recovery operations continue.


The disaster has also raised concerns in India, particularly in downstream areas of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The Trishuli forms part of the Narayani river system, which enters India and continues as the Gandak, meaning any significant downstream surge requires close monitoring by Indian authorities.

Indian agencies and state administrations have stepped up preparedness in vulnerable areas, while rescue and relief teams remain on alert. For residents along the river system, authorities are urging people to avoid riverbanks, follow official warnings and move to safer locations if evacuation orders are issued.
