DM, SP Conduct Surprise Inspection of Deoria District Jail, Review Security and Welfare Arrangements

Deoria, August 8: District Magistrate Madhusudan Hulgi and Superintendent of Police Abhijit R Shankar conducted a surprise inspection of the District Jail in Deoria on Saturday and reviewed security, healthcare, food, sanitation and welfare arrangements for inmates.

During the inspection of the women's barrack, the District Magistrate directed jail authorities to ensure nutritious food for children staying with their mothers and regular vaccination and other essential facilities for them. He stressed that special attention should be paid to ensuring that children face no inconvenience inside the prison.

The District Magistrate also inspected the jail kitchen and instructed officials to ensure that inmates are provided quality food in accordance with prescribed standards. He directed officials to maintain heightened vigilance in high-security barracks and keep effective surveillance over the activities of inmates lodged there.

Reviewing healthcare facilities, Hulgi directed the authorities to ensure proper treatment for sick inmates admitted to the jail hospital. He also said that no inmate should be kept in the jail hospital unnecessarily.

The District Magistrate further directed officials to connect young male and female inmates, as well as women prisoners, with skill-development programmes so that they can acquire skills and improve their employability.

Focus on ‘One Jail, One Product’

During the inspection, the District Magistrate also reviewed products manufactured under the “One Jail, One Product” initiative. He directed officials to promote these products, improve their productivity and quality, and establish proper marketing arrangements.

He said adequate market opportunities should be created for products made by inmates so that they can receive appropriate returns for their work.

Directions on Early Release and Legal Aid

The District Magistrate directed jail authorities to send proposals to the government, as per applicable rules, for mercy petitions and premature release of convicted male inmates above 70 years of age and convicted female inmates above 60 years of age.

He also instructed officials to ensure that inmates who are unable to obtain legal representation are provided government legal assistance through the District Legal Services Authority. This, he said, would help ensure effective representation and access to legal aid in their cases.

SP Reviews Jail Security

Superintendent of Police Abhijit R Shankar reviewed the security arrangements at the jail and directed officials to further strengthen security measures and maintain close surveillance over all activities.

He stressed that any lapse in jail security must be prevented and instructed personnel to remain vigilant at all times.

Jail Superintendent Ashish Ranjan, along with other jail officials and staff, was present during the inspection.
